It is hard to believe that it has already been a year since this enterprise began in earnest on WordPress. Within that year A Guide to Australian Bushranging has gained a strong following and continues to grow, approaching aspects of Australia’s bushranging history and surrounding culture that aren’t really being examined or explored elsewhere. More than just a place to share pictures or news articles, the aim of A Guide to Australian Bushranging has always been to reveal many of the hidden nooks of the history and expand the knowledge of the subject so that more and more people are inspired to connect with this wide-ranging history that really binds the people to the land through extraordinary people and stories.
The most difficult aspect of undertaking such an endeavour is finding the information and verifying it – especially given that so many books that exist on the topics have perpetuated urban legends and myths in place of the truth. By challenging the myths and legends it exposes, more often than not, that the truth that inspired them is far more interesting and relatable. It is also difficult to open up the eyes of the masses to the fact that bushranging is far more deeply embedded in Australian history and diverse than simply Ned Kelly. Bushranging is something that goes all the way back to the first fleet with our first bushranger – a former slave named John Caesar. Bushrangers have existed as long as there have been Europeans in Australia and have encompassed a myriad of races, ages, genders, sexualities and social classes. In essence, the tale of Australian bushranging is the tale of the ever changing nature of Australia.
Within this book you will find a selection of articles from the first year of A Guide to Australian Bushranging, many edited and elaborated on, some with new illustrations. This is a celebration of some of the most popular content and characters featured on the site as well as a mission statement for the future. There is plenty more to come, we have only just scratched the surface.
